You approach the structure upstream. It is built of unmortared stone, and a water wheel beside its entrance creaks and wobbles but does not spin. Inside is dark, and two paths from its door lead downstream and behind the structure.

The Exquisite Beast - by Evan Dahm and Yuko Ota
A series of illustrations of a monster evolving traded between Yuko and Evan. All illustrations were done with ink and inkwash.

If you were not previously aware, these fine books are now available for preorder! Including-but-not-limited-to my and Evan’s collected Exquisite Beast project!

We worked really hard on designing these books and the Exquisite Beast book is hopefully gonna be really lovely, especially the deluxe edition. We’re shooting for the deluxe cover to be a three-piece done with black faux leather binding over a cloth cover with a screenprinted design, debossed title area, a pasted-on title card. With a ribbon bookmark. I’m ridiculously excited. 8D

And it’s gonna be full of weird monsters and that is cool, too!

Going to reblob this again because Yuko explains it so well. I am super excited about this Exquisite Beast book; it’s been really fun putting together and I think it will turn out great!

You leave the path where it crosses the river and head upstream over the boulders. They are worn smooth and round, and many have small worn or carved holes in them. Further upstream another path leaves the river and goes to the right, and beyond that stands a square stone structure.

The driftwood path goes uphill between two of the stone fingers briefly before plunging into a shaded valley. Beyond that you can see smoke, and a distant mountain with what looks like a great trench carved into its surface.

The figure is of polished black stone, maybe of the same sort the fingers are made of. It is the head of a thoughtful deity with four eyes. On the seaward finger from which it is suspended are three long rusted metal stakes.

Suspended between two of the fingers of rock is a round frame holding a small carven figure. The fingers march on down the beach at regular intervals as far as you can see. A path of rough boards snakes off between them into the grass inland.

This is the first part of a little project I will work on while traveling. I will take reader input on where to go next, and we will see where this goes. Updating from my phone so apologies for any awkwardness.

The beach is worn smooth and hard and the ocean is cold. Confused winds bring alternately sea-salt and the smell of smoke from somewhere inland. Before you jut black rocks like fingers. Two towers stand, skeletal, in the distance.

Packing zines! I’ve gotten really into making these lately, so I’ll have more little DIY things at my table at upcoming conventions than I usually do! These are my apocalyptic art book Aftermath, some tiny blue books of automatic drawings called Meqanism, and the first book of the Psychic Gear project.

I will have all of these things, and my actual books, at Stumptown this weekend in Portland, and at TCAF in May in Toronto!

Benign Kingdom will have a consulate at the Emerald City Comicon this weekend. You may find it at booths F12-F15.

We’ll have Spring 2012 and Fall 2012 individual art books, collections, and prints. We’ll also have a few advanced copies of the Spring 2013 individual art books.

If you are in Seattle this weekend we would love to see you! Benign Kingdom is also sponsoring the Kracklefest party so that is super cool.

I (Evan) will be at the Consulate with my own books, as per usual. ECCC is a great show and I’m excited that it’ll be Benign Kingdom’s biggest appearance yet!
