Hey I just finished all the inks for Island Book, my upcoming seafaring-fantasy-adventure graphic novel with First Second Books.
I think it will be good!!! but I’m not used to drawing a whole big book without showing anybody! excited to get into the coloring phase.

BIG NEW THING
Two sequels to Island Book are in production with First Second Books. These sequels build a cohesive trilogy out of Island Book, and expand the fable storytelling of the first book into an enormous, harrowing adventure story with a focus on authoritarianism, looming apocalypse, and queer identity.

I’m working on a graphic novel for First Second Books called Island Book! Very excited to finally let everyone know about this; I’ve been working on it for a whiiiile already. Here is the announcement, on AV Club.
Island Book is an adventure story in a world of endless, mysterious ocean. It is NOT set in the same world as my other comics, but it feels aesthetically similar to Rice Boy to me.
It has been YEARS since I’ve approached a new story and a totally new setting. There are things I’m trying to do with this story that crystallize a lot of what’s important to me about secondary worlds and visual storytelling and the million things I’ve learned in the ten years of making fantasy-adventure comics.

Island Book in just four weeks.
We’re figuring out details lately for the official debut of the book at TCAF in Toronto, a few days before the actual official release– May 11 and 12. I’ll have the book and tons of original art and extra material, I’ll be doing a signing at the festival with First Second Books, I’ll be on a panel maybe too??? And then flying across the country to VanCAF the following weekend. Really looking forward.
I’m happy with this book and excited to finally finally have it out there!! It’s a different sort of story in some ways, and an intentional re-connection with some aspects of my experience working on Rice Boy in some others. Thank you so much to First Second Books for your support in making this thing happen. I hope you all like it!!! I’m excited about Future Projects!!!!
