Putting together an art book of Island Book development stuff! It’s probably going to be 40 pages, and extremely dense with sketches and other art, presented as coherently and non-spoilerly as possible. Probably to debut at SPX.
These first three images are from 2014 (!!!) when I was working on the pitch and hadn’t figured out how it would look; the last one is the more-or-less final appearance of the main characters.
We’re figuring out details lately for the official debut of the book at TCAF in Toronto, a few days before the actual official release– May 11 and 12. I’ll have the book and tons of original art and extra material, I’ll be doing a signing at the festival with First Second Books, I’ll be on a panel maybe too??? And then flying across the country to VanCAF the following weekend. Really looking forward.
Finished coloring Island Book; it’ll be out in 2019 from First Second Books. I have worked very hard on it and I think it’s good, or at least it’s not like many other things.
In the near future I’m gonna do these things:
- not draw for 2 or 3 days
- Set up a page on rice-boy.com for this book! I know that site is mostly for Overside work and this isn’t that, but most important thing to me seems to be keeping things visible and centralized.
- Get two art books printed in advance of the book coming out: one of production art and commentary, and a second entitled “Vessels” with a series of still life illustrations of artifacts from the book.
- Get seriously back into Vattu; 2 or 3 pages a week. Closing in on the end of book 3, and I’ve hated having to take a break to meet this deadline. Thanks for your patience.
I am too close to this book to know if it’s good. It’ll be more immediately visible than anything I’ve made so far when it comes out, and it still kind of feels like I fooled my publisher; like I’m sneaking my weird little thing into mainstream book publishing. Don’t tell
Two sequels to Island Book are in production with First Second Books. These sequels build a cohesive trilogy out of Island Book, and expand the fable storytelling of the first book into an enormous, harrowing adventure story with a focus on authoritarianism, looming apocalypse, and queer identity.
Island Book 2 comes out in 2021, and 3 in 2022. As with everything I work on, you can follow along with some of the process on my twitter, instagram, patreon…
